Day 9: Mando and Ribe!

After breakfast this morning, we decided to explore Mando.

We started on foot, where we saw sheep, goats, and the Mando Mill. The Mill was actually built by a Dutchman, and has an interesting mechanism for someone to manually change the direction of the mill as the wind changes.

Here is the Mando Mill:

And here are photos from our trek on foot:

Then we decided to rent bikes and tour the circumference of the island, which is a total of 10 km (~6 mi). It was SO much fun! I even managed to take a few photographs with my phone while riding.

Here are photos from biking around Mando:

My favorites were the sentry sheep!

Then we had lunch at the Cafe Mandopigen. They source their ingredients locally whenever possible, and it showed! The food was absolutely phenomenal.

Here are photos of our meal:

Afterward, we took the ‘bus’ back across the tidal flats during low tide. Only we took the ‘water route’ back instead of the main road, and tourists weren’t allowed on top of the ‘bus’ while traversing the water route. We were sure glad for the big tractor tires!

Here is what we saw from inside the ‘bus’:

Back on dry land, we asked our ‘bus’ driver (who turned out to be a Nielsen) about how to get back to Ribe, with the normal bus schedule being jumbled up due to the school being on holiday this week.

He was great – he told us he was going into Ribe for groceries, and if we waited while he washed the ‘bus,’ he would drive us into town. He was as good as his word, even dropping us off in front of our Airbnb! I told Marc we must have good karma from picking up PCT’ers back home…

At our Airbnb we met our new hosts, dropped our gear off, and walked through Ribe to see the Riberhus Slotsbanke. Ribe is the oldest city in Denmark, and this location is the site of the ruins of a fortress dating back to at least the 1300s.

Here is a photo of the entrance to the ruins:

And here is the main section of the ruins, with walls ~1 meter (3 feet) thick!

And here are other sights we saw along the way:

Tomorrow is our ‘Viking day,’ since we got back too late today to visit the museums. We are looking forward to continuing our discovery of Ribe!
