This morning we woke well-rested from sleeping on super comfy twin beds at our Airbnb from last night. We packed up and hiked to where we needed to catch our ‘bus’ to Mando.
Along the way, we saw something that made us think of home (read the business name on the van):

Then we found our ‘bus’:

The ‘bus’ to Mando takes about a half hour to cross the straight at low tide, which is only passable twice a day. Here were our views as we headed to Mando:

We read that Mando has only had electricity for a few years, which makes sense….it is a very small community of around 35 people year-round, and no power lines in sight. Candles and matches were available in local shops, though not put front-and-center.
Once here, we saw that a photographer was actually the person who put Mando “on the map,” so to speak. I thought that was pretty cool. Here is one side of one of the great informational kiosks put up using his photographs:

Then we wandered Mando and found the local church. It looks like the pastor might be a Nielsen?

We also found a gravestone that could be a relative:

We wandered some more, and saw a weather vein my cousin Bryan would approve of:

More photos from our tour of the island:

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the showers of Denmark. I forgo yesterday thinking it might be an anomaly, but today has proven me wrong. Here is our Mando bathroom, similar to the one yesterday:

On the other hand, here is the magic stovetop I used to make dinner tonight:

It was so cool! No buttons involved, just a touchpad for the controls.
Tomorrow we explore Mando in the morning, and then head back to Ribe (pronounced with a soft I). We’re looking forward to exploring the Viking center next!
